Studying abroad is a mind opening adventure Pirie Gruetzmacher tells Top Universities.

Bachelor of International and Strategic Relations
University of Malaya
Year of Graduation: 2011

Pirie Gruetzmacher’s first home is in Germany – her second is in Malaysia. “My parents wanted to have their children grow up in an international, multicultural environment,” she says, “Southeast Asia as the world’s most diverse region fitted perfectly into these criteria.”

Pirie was just 16-years-old when she enrolled at the University of Malaya and says it’s a very interesting and mind-opening adventure to study in a university as one of the relatively few international undergraduate students. The University of Malaya – which was ranked 39 in the QS.com Asian University Rankings – only recently opened officially to international undergraduate students.

“The teachers are open-minded and very supportive to international students,” Pirie says. “Courses are interesting and the style of teaching is mostly effective. It is a very rewarding experience to study in Malaysia as one does not only learn the academics inside the classroom, but gains invaluable skills to deal with diverse interpersonal relations from a variety of cultural backgrounds.”

In the future, Pirie would like to work in the field of international law, diplomacy or strategic planning. For now, she’s experiencing – and enjoying – the best of studying abroad: diversity, a high academic standard, the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and the experience of universal values that connect all people, regardless of differences.
