Study, scholarships and student life in the UK

When Wali Sayeed’s brother moved from Kuwait to the UK he decided to do more than just tag along - he enrolled in university. Wali speaks with Top Universities about life as an undergraduate student.

For the past three years, Wali Sayeed has been studying for a BSc in Economics at the University of Southampton in the UK. “I chose the university out of one of the conditional offers I obtained and because it had the best reputation,” he says.

As for choosing to study Economics: “I did very well in the subject at high school and I enjoyed it because it involved a lot of applied mathematics,” Wali says. “I’m going to be undertaking a Masters in Economics and I’ve already applied to several universities. My degree involved a lot of problem-solving using mathematical concepts beyond A-level standard and the dissertation at the end of my third year also taught me how to do independent research and write up ‘reports’, so it’s prepared me for graduate study.”

According to Wali, one of the best things about university is the ease at which you meet new people and make new friends. “Plus there’s the complete independence – you’re able to do whatever you like, whenever you like – and the stress-free life. Apart from your degree, there aren't many sources of stress at uni.”

Wali managed to gain two scholarships from the university, each worth £1,000 to fund his study, and he also got some help from his parents. “If students work hard and obtain decent grades, the School of Social Sciences at the University of Southampton will offer them scholarships worth £1,000 (one is obtainable for their second and another for their third year),” Wali says.

Remaining focused on his degree was one of the challenges of being an undergraduate student but Wali coped by enjoying student life outside of the lecture theatres that included sports and a good night out!
